Toronto police officer injured after being struck by vehicle in Scarborough

Toronto police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck and injured an officer in Scarborough on Tuesday.

Authorities were called to a parking lot in the Kennedy Road and Ellesmere Road area around 6:15 p.m. for reports that an officer was hit by a vehicle.

Acting Insp. Craig Young said plainclothes officers were on the scene for an investigation, and an arrest was made.

Insp. Young says one person driving a white, four-door car drove directly at one of the police officers. The male officer that was hit was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In an update on Wednesday, police said early indicators are that it was a deliberate act.

The driver of the vehicle fled the parking lot after hitting two other vehicles travelling westbound on Ellesmere Road. The suspect vehicle, with a Quebec licence plate, was later recovered in the area.

The Toronto Police Association president reacted to the incident on Twitter, condemning the violence against police and offering support to the injured officer.

“Officers are increasingly subjected to violence and yet they continue to go to work every day to protect the public,” tweeted TPA president Jon Reid. “We will support our member as he recovers from his injuries.”

Insp. Young says police are searching for one suspect. He says investigators are unsure if the suspect driver is connected to the unit where the earlier arrest was made.
