Police say a man in his 20s is dead following what they believe is a targeted daytime shooting in North York that forced three schools in the area to go into lockdown while they investigated.

A man is dead following a daytime shooting near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West in North York.

Toronto police were called to Firgrove Crescent and Jane Street in North York around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday following reports of gunshots.

When they arrived they found a man in his mid-20s suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no suspect description at this time but police say they believe this was a targeted shooting.

Nearby schools Firgrove Public School, St. Francis De Sales, and Westview Centennial Secondary School were all placed in lockdown, which have since been lifted.

Police want to reassure parents there will continue to be a presence in the area.

“We have a presence now. The neighbourhood officers from 31 Division will be here, not only today, but make sure there is special attention in the area and we’ll be monitoring any activities,” said Supt. Andy Singh.
