Man charged with attempted murder after shots fired at officers in Scarborough

A 35-year old man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly fired shots at officers and barricaded himself inside his home in Scarborough on Tuesday evening.

Members of the Toronto police Guns and Gang Unit attended a home on Shenley Road in the Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East area around 8 p.m. to conduct a search warrant and arrest a suspect wanted for a previous offence.

It is alleged that plainclothes officers attempted to arrest the man at the home. In response, the man fled, pulled out a firearm and began firing at the officers before barricading himself inside.

“This was an extremely reckless and overtly brazen attempt to do bodily harm to police officers,” siad Toronto Police Service Superintendent Steve Watts at a news conference on Wednesday morning.

Police say the suspect continued to fire the gun several more times through a side door of the house.

A police vehicle and neighbouring residences were struck by the gunfire. No injuries were reported.

“Although the officers came under extensive gunfire remarkably none were injured,” Watts said.

The suspect surrendered to police sometime around 11:30 p.m. after more than two hours of negotiations with the members of the Emergency Task Force. Police had initially asked that nearby residents take shelter in their basements during the course of the negotiations.

Police confirmed there were no other people inside the residence at the time of the incident.

Toronto resident Thomas James McMahon, 35, is facing several charges including three counts of attempted murder.

He was scheduled to appear in a Toronto courtroom on Wednesday morning.
