Toronto police are investigating speed as a factor in a midtown crash that sent two people to hospital early Monday morning. Carl Hanstke has more.

A driver is in hospital in critical condition after a speeding SUV slammed into the back of another vehicle in Midtown Toronto.

The crash occurred on Yonge Street near Glengrove Avenue, just south of Lawrence Avenue, around 12:45 a.m. on Monday.

Police say a white Ford SUV was travelling southbound on Yonge at high speeds when it rear-ended a red GMC pickup truck.

The driver of the SUV, a man in his 30s, became trapped in the vehicle following the crash and needed to be extracted with the jaws of life. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was brought to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have confirmed speed was a factor in the crash and say they are investigating whether or not impairment was also a factor.

Yonge Street was closed in both directions at Glengrove for the investigation but the roads have since reopened.
