A woman is dead, and a second woman that rushed to her aide is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after they were both struck by vehicles in Brampton.

Peel police were called to Heritage Road and Steeles Avenue just before 6 a.m. on Friday.

Investigators say a 41-year-old woman was crossing the street around 5:45 a.m. and was struck by an eastbound car and sent flying into the westbound lanes, where she was then struck again by an SUV that fled the scene.

Const. Mandeep Khatra says a 31-year-old woman, described as a Good Samaritan, witnessed the incident and went to help the other woman. Both were struck by a third vehicle travelling in the westbound lane.

The 41-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Good Samaritan was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Investigators are searching for the driver of the SUV that struck the 41-year-old woman. The other two drivers remained on the scene of the incident.

The intersection is closed as police investigate the incident. The closure is expected to remain in place for an extended period.
