Halton police believe numerous bomb threats to schools are ‘connected’

A series of threats sent to schools in Halton Region appear to be “connected,” Halton regional police said on Thursday, adding that the threats sent via email usually indicate the presence of a bomb, or other threats of violence.

Police say the threats have also been made in connection to other public locations throughout the region.

“While none of the threats to date have proved to be credible, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) investigates each and every one and initiates bomb threat protocols when necessary,” HRPS said in a release.

“Investigators believe all these threats to be connected and our officers are working tirelessly with our community partners and other agencies to bring these investigations to a successful conclusion.”

Police acknowledged that the threats are “extremely stressful for the community and those specifically targeted.”

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) said police were contacted after threats were made against several schools in Oakville ahead of classes on Friday.

Concerned parents called the CityNews 680 newsroom saying threats were made. Some parents were considering keeping their children home for the day.

An HDSB spokesperson later confirmed that hate-filled messages were made “that indicate threats will be received [Friday].”

“This message was immediately shared with the police,” the spokesperson said.

“As you may be aware, some Oakville schools have received threats over the past few weeks and months. The Halton District School Board informed families and staff at Oakville schools today of this message out of an abundance of caution. The message received does not identify specific schools.”

The HDSB says safety procedures are in place at all schools, and parents will be informed of any developments.

“While all threats are treated seriously, we believe these threats lack credibility and are more rooted in hateful mischief than high-level risk,” the representative added.

In November, Oakville Trafalgar High School was forced into lockdown after threats were made. The details of the threat were not made public.
