How many hot dogs did Blue Jays’ fans devour? Team smashes ‘Loonie Dogs’ record

Wednesday is National Hot Dog Day and baseball fans in Toronto celebrated a day early by devouring thousands of dogs — setting a new Rogers Centre record in the process.

Fans who were in attendance as the Blue Jays hosted the San Diego Padres ate a whopping 75,173 hot dogs on Tuesday night, smashing the team’s previous ‘Loonie Dog Night’ record set earlier this year.

Tuesday night’s game had the largest attendance for a Loonie Dog game this year. Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi has been keeping track of how many dogs Jays fans have been stuffing their faces with this season.

According to the data, Tuesday’s game ranks second in ‘dogs per fan,’ that record was set on the first Loonie Dog night of the 2023 season on April 25.

Fans ate a staggering 444,000 hot dogs during the course of the 2022 season. That total season record is well within reach with fans only needing to put away less than 100,000 dogs with four ‘Loonie Dogs’ games remaining.

Loonie Dogs Night is presented by Schneiders and happens at every Tuesday home game at Rogers Centre. Fans can purchase $1 hot dogs from various concession stands around the stadium.

American competitive eater and hot-dog-eating legend Joey Chestnut made an appearance at the Jays first Loonie Dogs Night of the 2023 season.

The new record gave fans something to cheer about in an otherwise sour evening as the baseball team on the field lost 9-1. The team’s homestand continues Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with their second of three games against the Padres.

Fans will get a chance to break the record again during the next Loonie Dog game on Aug. 1 when the Blue Jays host the Baltimore Orioles.
