Toronto man charged after video shows vehicle striking cyclist

A Toronto man has been charged after a cyclist was struck by a vehicle on Yonge Street on the morning of July 19.
Police say the crash, which was captured on dash-cam video, happened on Yonge just north of Lawrence Avenue at around 8:20 a.m. after the cyclist and motorist briefly argued while stopped at a red light.
When the light turned green police say the cyclist proceeded through the intersection and “the accused accelerated and struck the cyclist.”
The dash-cam footage submitted to CityNews shows a car striking a cyclist from behind and knocking him off the bike.
The car then appears to accelerate into the intersection while pushing both the cyclist and his bike along the pavement.
The cyclist manages to get up before the driver gets out of the vehicle.
Police say the cyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the driver remained on scene.
On Friday, police charged Yurii Karpenko, 28, with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.
Toronto biking lawyer David Shellnut tells CityNews he is now representing the victim.
Before becoming involved in the case, Shellnut commented on the video, saying “unfortunately, we have a lot of familiarity with these situations and represent at least a dozen clients … struck like this.”
