Man dead, 1 other critically injured in late-night shooting in Mississauga school parking lot

One man has died, and a second man is fighting for his life in hospital after the pair were shot in the parking lot of a nearby school in Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police were called to the Montevideo Road and Lorca Crescent area near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Derry Road just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday for reports of a shooting.

Two male victims, one in their 40s and a second under the age of 20, were located with gunshot wounds.

Const. Tyler Bell said one victim was taken to a local hospital while the second victim was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre. The man in his 40s has since died from his injuries.

The two victims were known to each other.

School parking lot a popular late-night gathering spot: neighbours

Const. Bell said there was a gathering in the parking lot of Settlers Green Public School at the time of the shooting. Nearby residents tell CityNews that many people frequent the lot late at night, and one neighbour said they heard what sounded like an argument before gunshots rang out.

Const. Bell said investigators believe as many as 20 people had gathered in the parking lot late on Wednesday night. There is no suspect information at this time.

A police spokesperson tells CityNews that authorities have been in contact with school officials, noting a minimal impact on daily operations. The school remained open on Thursday, but the parking lots will be closed to the public.

“Should you decide to keep your child home, please report the absence through the Safe Arrival app,” a school spokesperson said.

A heavy police presence is expected nearby due to the investigation.
