Mississauga strip club ‘over-served’ patron who later died in wrong-way crash on Highway 427: AGCO

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has suspended a Mississauga strip club’s liquor licence for 60 days after an investigation found it over-served a patron who later drove the wrong way on Highway 427 and died in a crash in May, 2023.

The AGCO probe found that Midway Invader, a licensed establishment located at 6809 Invader Crescent in Mississauga, served the patron five double shots of alcohol within less than half-an-hour, violating sections of the Liquor Licence and Control Act.

It also found that the bartender who served the person “had not completed an approved responsible service training course,” as required by law.

The driver, who was not identified in the release, later left and drove the wrong-way on Highway 427 before being killed in a crash.

The AGCO says its investigation uncovered other offences at the establishment, including permitting intoxication, and serving alcohol outside of permitted hours.

“The AGCO’s review revealed that the licensee was found to be serving alcohol after 2:00 a.m. on multiple occasions,” it said in a release.

Midway Invader has the right to appeal the suspension, the AGCO notes.

“Our laws and regulations exist to protect the public and prevent tragedies like this,” Dr. Karin Schnarr, registrar and CEO of the AGCO, said in a release.

“This incident show the devastating consequences that can result when liquor licence holders do not abide by Ontario’s high standards of responsible service. We will actively monitor Midway Invader’s operations to confirm that they have taken concrete measures to ensure the safety of their patrons.”
