Hurricanes Win Stanley Cup

Lord Stanley is staying down south.

After a gutsy series rally forced Game 7, the Edmonton Oilers fell short of their goal to bring the Cup back to Canada on Monday night, falling 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Oilers were attempting to become the first Canadian champion since Montreal hoisted the coveted silver Cup overhead in 1993.   The Canes, however, played their most intense game of the series to pull out the win.

“Well you know what that was probably the hardest game,” Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. “They came to play tonight, but our guys were just relentless, they never, ever stopped.”

Carolina netminder Cam Ward was given the nod as the MVP, the first rookie to do so since Patrick Roy in 1986.

“It’s just a dream come true,” he said. “The Conn Smythe, you could have given it to anyone on this team, the real important one is the Stanley Cup.”

Aaron Ward, Frantisek Kaberle and Justin Williams scored for the Hurricanes, while Fernando Pisani replied for the Oilers, who valiantly tried to tie things up falling behind 2-0.

“This team, they don’t give up,” Canes’ captain Rod Brind’Amour stressed. “What more can you say?

“Desire. We wanted it. We had too many guys that sacrificed their whole careers and weren’t going to be denied.”
