Country’s first accessible playground opens in Toronto’s Oriole Park

The first playground designed for children with disabilities officially opened in Toronto’s Oriole Park on Saturday.

Neshama Playground has a water park, sensory musical features, Braille panels, an enclosed merry-go-round and accessible swings.

“So many residents have shared with me how excited they are to have this wonderful new playground in their neighbourhood,” said Ulli Rath of the Friends of Oriole Park.

Oriole Park is on Oriole Parkway, near Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue.

Investment advisor Thomas Caldwell and lawyer Steven Skurka spearheaded the project with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art, inclusive playground.

They recruited friends and associates, who became known as A Bunch of Guys, and raised more than $700,000 for the project.

“I’m thrilled to join in the opening of the Neshama Playground,” said Lt.-Gov. David Onley, who himself uses a wheelchair.

“Play is an important aspect of every child’s life, and this playground will ensure that children with disabilities are able to enjoy the fun offered by its many charms.”
