Trial Back On For Former Drug Squad Officers

Five former members of the Toronto Police drug squad will once again be heading to trial.
Corruption-related charges were first laid against six officers in 2004 but were stayed in January 2008 because the trial took too long.
Superior Court Justice Ian Nordheimer made the 2008 decision, but it was overruled by the Supreme Court on Monday.
John Schertzer, Steven Correia, Joseph Miched, Ned Maodus, Raymond Pollard and Richard Benoit initially faced 30 corruption-related charges.
They were based on allegations they conducted searches without warrants, falsified notes to hide those alleged facts and didn’t account for all of the money seized in drug investigations, as well as extortion and assault allegations.
Charges against Benoit were dropped.
A date for the new trial has not yet been set.
