He was found a week ago in the dark, slumped over the wheel of his still running SUV, the car nestled against the entrance to an animal shelter. Police have been working on the murder of 22-year-old Daniel Da Silva ever since.
And now they’ve made an arrest in the baffling case and revealed what they believe was behind it: a robbery over drugs.
Witnesses heard shots ring out near the York Civic Centre around 7pm on February 26th and one woman saw a man running away from the scene. He’s believed to have been the passenger who was in the car with the victim. Cops think Da Silva was lured to the area for the meeting with his killers before being held up at gunpoint and shot.
Detectives got their big break from security video at the scene, which helped them round up their suspect. He’s 20-year-old Andre Gladstone Pierre and he’s been charged with second-degree murder.
“The area where the incident took place had a number of security cameras, and those cameras and the images we were able to capture were instrumental,” explains Det. Sgt. Savas Kyriacou.
Pierre was arrested early Thursday and made his first appearance in a Finch Ave. courtrroom later in the afternoon.
A second person is still outstanding and police are hoping for clues about who he is. Call (416) 808-7400 if you can help wrap up Toronto’s ninth homicide of the year.
