Legendary Ontario businessman John A. Tory passes away after stroke

TORONTO, Ont. – John Arnold Tory, a prominent Toronto lawyer with ties to both the Rogers and Thomson empires, died suddenly after suffering a stroke Monday.
John Tory Senior passed away at the age of 81 in Florida, shocking his family, who said Tory was in very good health before the unexpected stroke.
Tory founded a prominent law firm along with his father and twin-brother James, which is now known as Torys LLP, before becoming a senior financial adviser to Ken Thomson. Tory was key in guiding Thomson Corp. from a newspaper publishing company to a renowned international business.
Tory was also a close friend of media mogul Ted Rogers and was a standing member of the Rogers Communications board-of-directors until his death.
His son, John Tory, was the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives, and is now a leading business executive and radio host.
Tory’s legacy also includes creating the Tory Regional Trauma Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital.
