Police officer, woman seriously injured in east-end crash

TORONTO, Ont. – A Toronto police officer and a civilian driver suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in a head-on collision near a busy intersection in the city’s east end.
The officer fractured and dislocated his pelvis, and the 57-year-old woman fractured her right ankle.
The crash happened on Midland Avenue, north of Lawrence Avenue East, at around 12:40 p.m.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash, but only two of the vehicles sustained extensive damage. The third vehicle was a taxi. The driver of the taxi was not injured.
Toronto police say the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were trapped in their cars and had to be cut from the wreckage. Paramedics said the two were conscious and breathing after the crash.
There’s no word yet on what caused the collision.
Constable Clint Stibbe with Traffic Services told 680News the officer was responding to an officer assist call when the crash happened.
Midland Avenue is expected to stay closed both ways at Midwest Road for the investigation into the evening hours.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the collision.
