OWhen it comes to organ donation Toronto is at the bottom of the list

TORONTO, Ont. – North Bay leads Ontario in the number of people who’ve signed organ-donor registrations.

Sudbury comes in second — and Toronto is at the bottom of the list.

An analysis by the Toronto Star says about 34 per cent of residents in the northern communities registered consent for organ and tissue donation — while Toronto comes at just four per cent.

In Hamilton, 25 per cent of residents have signed the donor registry, while it’s 20 per cent in London and 15 in Ottawa.

The provincial average is 17 per cent.

Experts say the variation is likely due to a number of factors, including the small town effect, an overly cumbersome registration process for Ontarians who still have the red-and-white health card, and even the average age of a city’s residents.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network says 90 per cent of Ontarians say they support organ donation — yet only 17 per cent have registered their intent to donate.
