Niagara double murder suspect dies before trial

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – A suspect linked to a double murder case in Niagara Falls has died in prison before his case could make it to trial.
Paul Mellor, 38, was to face two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of an 82 year old woman and her long time friend, an 88 year old man. Both were found badly beaten in the woman’s home in December 2009.
The pretrial hearing was scheduled to begin on September 29, but police said the court date will most likely be bumped up to mid or late August. An agreed statement of facts will be presented and the charges will be stayed at that time.
Mellor was in a Stratford prison when he was found dead, and an investigation will be conducted by the coroner’s office in London.
