9 Canadians detained after cocaine seized from private jet in Dominican Republic

Nine Canadians are currently being detained in the Dominican Republic after officials in the Caribbean nation seized a large quantity of drugs last week.

In a press release dated April 6, the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) says 200 packages were seized from an aircraft at Punta Cana International Airport. The flight was scheduled to go from Punta Cana to Toronto.

A video tweet shows law enforcement agents removing a number of duffel bags containing the illegal drugs from a private jet operated by Pivot Airlines, which is headquartered in Toronto and specializes in “delivering complex and multijurisdictional charters to corporate and leisure clients, the resource sector, sports teams and governmental agencies.”

On April 7, the agency confirmed the packages contained 209 kg of cocaine.

The Canadians, along with one person from India and a Dominican, are being held to determine what their involvement, if any, is with the illegal drugs seized.

“An extensive investigation process has been initiated around this case, …to clearly establish who is directly linked to the seizure of the substance,” officials said in a statement.
