Tense footage captured at a downtown Toronto construction site shows a worker entangled in a crane and dangling from several stories high on Tuesday.
The video posted by Instagram user @my_s1 depicts the construction worker clinging to a moving crane with both arms as it lowers towards the ground at varying speeds.
PCL Construction, the site operator, confirms to CityNews that a rigger with the company “got entangled with a tagline after hooking a load,” and the crane operator failed to notice.
The incident happened at a construction site near Front and Simcoe streets in the downtown core. Roy Thomson Hall is visible in the background of the footage.
The crews filming the incident can be heard yelling “oh my god” and “hang on” to the hanging individual.
“How the f*** did this happen?” yells one worker.
As the crane moves closer to the ground, the workers can be heard shouting for the operator to stop to avoid crushing the flinging man. A hardhat is seen plunging to the ground below during the filming.
“Just let your hard hat fall, bro,” one person can be heard shouting.
“Fortunately, he was safely lowered to the work surface and not seriously injured,” says a spokesperson for PCL.
“The safety of all workers and the community is our top priority. We are working with all appropriate authorities, and the incident is currently under investigation.”
The Ministry of Labour has also been called in to investigate.
