Man charged for impersonating officer, issuing fake parking ticket

A man is under arrest after he allegedly pretended to be a peace officer and requested money for a fake parking ticket in downtown Toronto.

Police say they were called to the area of Yonge and Elm streets in around 10 p.m. on Tuesday for a suspicious incident.

They allege a man was sitting in a parked car in the area when another man approached dressed as a parking enforcement officer. The man dressed as the officer claimed to be issuing a parking ticket and said the fine could be paid “up-front” at a cheaper rate.

Police say the impersonating suspect was wearing a bright yellow safety vest with “parking enforcement” written across the back, a bullet-proof vest, a light blue shirt and black pants. He was also carrying a clipboard with yellow paper tickets.

“Police would like to make the public aware that officers and peace officers do not accept nor process payment for fines,” reads a release from Toronto Police Service.

Police arrested 22-year-old Abdulhamid Mohamed on Wednesday morning. He has been charged with impersonating a peace officer, extortion and possession of property obtained by crime.

Investigators believe there may additional victims and are asking anyone with more information to contact them.
