GO Train riders on Lakeshore East, Stouffville lines will need to transfer to TTC today

It could be a messy commute for thousands of commuter who rely on GO trains. As Tina Yazdani reports, Metrolinx is limiting service on the Lakeshore East and Stouffville lines throughout the weekend and on Monday.

A heads-up for GO Transit riders planning on using the Lakeshore East or Stouffville lines to get to work on Monday, service will continue to be disrupted on a portion of the lines to begin the work week.

Trains on the Lakeshore East line will only run between Oshawa GO and Danforth GO stations. Trains will not continue to Union Station, and customers are advised to take the TTC from Main Street Station, near Danforth GO Station, to Union Station.

Meanwhile, on the Stouffville line, trains will only run between Old Elm GO and Kennedy GO stations on Monday. Riders are being advised to take the TTC from Kennedy to Union.

“For customers looking for direct travel into Union Station on Monday, please consider the Richmond Hill GO train line in the morning and afternoon,” Metrolinx says in a release.

The Monday disruption comes after train service was suspended on the line due to “important infrastructure work.” The work also impacted a portion of the Stouffville Line during that time.

Regular train service on both lines will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

“In order to expand GO Transit service to communities across the GTHA, we must complete critical construction work,” a spokesperson for Metrolinx tells CityNews. “This work happens through workblocks – which are brief periods, often during off-peak times and in warmer seasons, that allow our construction teams to finish important infrastructure work while also ensuring there is as little impact to customers as possible.”

Metrolinx says crews will be doing infrastructure upgrades and maintenance work on the tracks between Agincourt and Milliken GO stations, including infrastructure upgrades for the Stouffville Line expansion and ongoing work at Union Station for the Don yard track shift.

“This work can only be done when trains are not running,” the spokesperson says.

They also have said that “this is not the first time” that work has been done on a weekday. “As noted previously, workblocks are necessary throughout the year to build and upgrade the infrastructure necessary to expand GO Transit service,” the spokesperson continued.

There are scheduled modifications lined up for Friday, Oct. 27 as well, with Lakeshore West train service modified to start and end at Oakville GO, and GO buses will operate between Oakville GO and Union Station. Other modifications include replacement buses to and from Oakville GO, Clarkson GO, Port Credit GO and an express to Union Station Bus Terminal.

Metrolinx asks anyone travelling from from Exhibition, Mimico, and Long Branch GO stations to use the TTC on the 27th. West Harbour to Oakville rail service will be operating on an hourly schedule.

The TTC says it is planning to add more than a dozen trains during the morning and afternoon commute to help GO riders get from Danforth and Kennedy GO stations to Union Station.
