Tim Hortons’ bigger coffee cup sizes took effect Monday — a move that will likely both satisfy commuters’ morning caffeine cravings and challenge bladders at the same time.
The popular coffee chain started serving up its brand of joe in new 710 mL cups (24 oz) — its new and even bigger extra large size.
The change brings Tim Hortons sizes more in line with American chains, that have phased out the 236 mL “small” cups, and competitors including Starbucks, Second Cup and McDonalds.
Under the new sizes, the old small is now an extra small, the old medium is now the small, the old large is now a medium and the old extra large is now just a large.
“With that introduction, we’ve changed the size and shifted down the name of the hot cup sizes. The customer who might have traditionally ordered the large double double will now order the medium double double. The same amount of coffee, same price,” said Michelle Robichaud of Tim Hortons Canada.
For those who may need to add some extra cream and sugar to top up an newly increased size, a large with cream and sugar works out to be 115 calories, 6 grams of fat and 13 grams of sugar.
Tim Hortons tested the new sizes out on customers in the Ontario cities of Kingston and Sudbury this past summer and the positive response prompted the company to roll out the new sizes nationwide.
