SIU investigating fatal shooting in North York

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died of gunshot wounds after an “interaction” with Toronto officers in North York.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. Sunday at a Burger King drive-thru at Wilson Avenue and Keele Street.

“There was an interaction between police and a man, and a short time later, the man sustained a gunshot wound,” the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement. “He was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced deceased.”

Police have confirmed the victim is 23 years old. His name hasn’t been released.

The SIU, an arm’s length agency that is called in when someone is seriously hurt or killed in the presence of police, has taken over the case and has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to look into the circumstances of the man’s death.

A car involved in the incident was hauled away from the scene Monday morning.
