Council approves new home for Sam the Record Man sign next to Yonge-Dundas Square

Toronto city council has voted to allow the historic Sam the Record Man sign to be mounted on the roof of a city-owned building next to Yonge-Dundas Square.

Ryerson University will pay to install the sign at the Toronto Public Health building at Dundas and Victoria streets and will cover operational and maintenance costs.

The school will also notably be released from its agreement with the city to place the sign at the new Student Learning Centre or Gould Street Library, closer to the site where the Sam store stood.

Still, the related staff report recommends Ryerson put up a plaque at the original site directing the public to the sign’s new location.

Coun. Josh Matlow also introduced a motion, which council approved, to press any future buyer of the Victoria Street building to preserve the sign.

City staff worked closely with the family of store founder Sam Sniderman, Ryerson and the Downtown Yonge BIA and considered public feedback when developing its proposal.
