December is turning into a month of firsts for train travel in the GTA.
The much anticipated Line 1 extension began providing subway service beyond Toronto’s regional boundaries on Dec. 17 and now, about 2 weeks later, the first GO train picked up passengers from the new Downsview Park station on Saturday.
The Downsview Park GO station is located just west of Sheppard West and Chesswood Drive on the Barrie corridor. It is integrated into the TTC subway station and functions much like the one at Union station – allowing passengers to transfer between the TTC and GO trains at the same location.
The first GO train arrived at Downsview Park on the Barrie line at around 10:30 a.m., with a small group of train enthusiasts eager to take the inaugural ride despite the frigid temps.
TTC spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins says the official opening celebration will take place on Jan. 8, 2018.
Saturday also marked the launch of double the number of GO trains on the Barrie line.
