Mother Nature’s explosive fury destroyed an animal shelter in Midland on Thursday night after lightning struck the century old structure, spreading a devastating fire that killed up to 30 animals and injured dozens of others.
Volunteers at the shelter were devastated by the carnage and loss of life.
“I am here every day, I know all the animals, it is very traumatic for me,” said Hilda Davison. “This is the worst day of my life.”
Some were saved but have extensive injuries and their survival is still not assured.
“To come here and find, you know, some of the animals burnt and pretty badly injured. It has been tough. It has been a long night,” she adds.
Overwhelmed vet clinics did their best to treat severe burns, smoke inhalation and eye damage.
“We are currently treating some of them with fluids,” said Midland SPCA Senior Inspector Hugh Cohill. “Treating them with oxygen. All of them are critical patients. And we don’t know, for sure, how well everyone is going to do.”
With the historic shelter bulldozed due to intense structural damage, it is not known when or if another can be rebuilt.
For now, the volunteers are focusing on those so cruelly maimed by Mother Nature.
