Jays Crush Mariners To Take Series

A regulation M.L.B. game consists of nine innings, but it took just one offensively excessive frame for the Toronto Blue Jays to obliterate the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday afternoon.   Gregg Zaun led the charge, smashing a grand slam during a nine-run fourth inning to help lead the Jays to a seemingly easy 10-0 win over the impotent Seattle Mariners.

The nine runs matched a season-best for the Blue Jays. It was also the second time this year Seattle has allowed nine runs.

Zaun also had a solo home run and John Hattig, who last month became the first player from Guam in the major leagues, hit a three-run double for his first career RBIs during a memorable outing for the Jays and a forgettable one for their outgunned opponents.

The win gave Toronto two out of three games at Safeco Field and gave them a series win at Seattle for the first time since May 2001.

A.J. Burnett started for the Blue Birds, allowing six hits in eight innings while striking out a season-high 11 batters.   Burnett easily protected the Jays’ lead, not allowing a batter to reach third base until the seventh inning.

Justin Speier finished the combined shutout.
