Three NATO Soldiers Hurt In Kabul Blast

Three soldiers were wounded in Afghanistan Monday when a suicide bomber on foot blew himself up near a NATO military convoy in eastern Kabul.

Three civilians were also hurt in the blast but the bomber was the only one killed, according to senior police official Ali Shah Paktiawal. The attack occurred on a road frequented by troops in the capital and two unexploded hand grenades lay beside the bomber’s body according to reports.

“I saw an American four wheel drive entering Kabul and suddenly a guy who was standing next to a pump station ran toward the vehicle and detonated himself,” said eyewitness Sayid Rahman. “That vehicle was damaged and they managed to flee from the area.”

The nationalities of the soldiers involved were not disclosed, but their injuries were described as minor. They were taken to a nearby military hospital.

The explosion comes only a few days after another suicide attack killed 12 people and wounded more than 40 outside the Afghan Interior Ministry.

Meanwhile, according to a new Decima Research poll most Canadians believe the Afghan mission is a lost cause.

The survey of more than 2,000 Canadians found 59 per cent of respondents believe Canadian soldiers “are dying for a cause we cannot win.” Only 34 per cent disagreed with the statement.

There are currently about 2,200 Canadian soldiers deployed in Afghanistan. Thirty-seven soldiers and one diplomat have died since the mission began in 2002.
