Police Officer Stabbed

The officer was called to the area when the scuffle started in a parking lot near John and Adelaide around 2:30am. Two men involved in the fray apparently pulled out knives.

The cop was slashed in the head as he was trying to arrest one of the suspects after a brief footchase. He has since been treated and released from hospital.

Staff Sgt. Shaun Narine of 52 Division said there are a number of things he and his colleagues had to consider when they received the call for an officer down.

“You want to know who it is and you want to get there as fast as you possibly can because you don’t want it to continue,” he explained.

“You hear PC officer down and you want to know who is there. Who is looking around? Who else is in the area? … You want to get there, get assistance to the officer and take control of the scene as quickly as possible.”

Narine said four of the victims are still in hospital.

“For most of the parties multiple stab wounds,” he explained. “Two … have been treated and released and four are still under observation at the hospital.”

A witness named Mike explained how he saw the situation unfold.

“The officer was chasing the gentleman through the parking lot and then the gentleman twirled around and started throwing punches but he had a knife in his hand, so I guess he stabbed him in the side of the head … and then the officer took him down,” he said.

Kyle Garden and Jordan Brown, both 22, have been arrested and face several charges, including attempted murder in connection to the stabbing. One was apprehended at the scene and the other was nabbed a short distance away.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive.

The incident comes just one day after four people were injured in an apparent random shooting just blocks away. Police say with just a few dozen officers and thousands of club-goers, patrolling Toronto’s Entertainment District is getting more and more difficult.

“We could definitely use a little bit more assistance down there,” said Narine.
