Cop’s Family Pays Tear-Filled Tribute To Fallen Officer

He was a man who protected society’s most vulnerable.

His role models were Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II and his own mother.

His name was Davis Ahlowalia and up until this weekend, he was an outstanding officer with York Regional Police.

That all changed in a heartbeat early Saturday when the cop with a heart was killed in a terrible traffic crash in Woodbridge.

There was little left of either of the cars that exploded on impact when they hit each other at Major Mackenzie and Pine Valley Drive at 3:30am.

Two teens were also killed in the crash, while another clings to life in hospital.

On Monday, Ahlowalia’s family came to York Regional Police Headquarters for a tear-filled and heart breaking remembrance of their fallen relative.

The officer’s brother continually choked back tears while delivering a tribute to the sibling he lost so suddenly.

“With the help of God, we are trying to come to terms with the loss of a great man,” Anil Ahlowalia began, his voice halting.

“We mourn his sudden death, but more importantly we celebrate the life of a man who gave himself unconditionally to his family, his friends and everyone he met.”

The late officer regularly took time off from his duties to help the poor in Jamaica and India. And his family is hoping his death is not in vain.

“We pray that Davis’s senseless death will not be meaningless, that this young man’s life of charity and generosity will inspire all of us to love unconditionally, to give generously, and to live life to the fullest.”

He ended his tear-filled tribute by reading a letter of praise sent to Chief Armand La Barge about how his brother helped out the mother of a 23-year-old girl who was in severe distress.

In typical modest fashion, the officer had never bothered to mention it to his family.

“We were just going through his stuff and found it, and that’s the way our mother raised us,” Anil relates. “She’s an exceptional lady. She’s unbelievable, and Davis took everything she said and lived it.”

The Chief was also gracious in his praise of his lost colleague. “To me it’s like losing a son, and Davis was more than just a police officer to me,” he relates. “Davis was a friend. And in the short period of time that I had the privilege of serving with him, that friendship was strengthened.”

The family has already been in contact with the two teens that died, an emotional meeting that spoke more than any dialogue could ever say.   “When two families get together to mourn the loss of two young children, you know, there’s not many words that can be said but tears,” Anil explains.

He concluded by inviting everyone to his brother’s funeral to “celebrate his life”.

Ahlowalia was just 28 years old.
