Keon’s Return A Long Time Coming

To many he’s the prototypical Toronto Maple Leaf  — a graceful star who quietly went about the business of winning Stanley Cups, hoisting the trophy overhead four times during the team’s long gone Golden Area in the 60’s.

But after jumping to the WHA in 1975 following a bitter dispute with owner Harold Ballard, Dave Keon cut off all ties with the team, disgusted with how he was treated after so many years of loyal service.

Since then he’s somewhat stubbornly turned down numerous offers of reconciliation, including an invitation to the closing ceremonies at Maple Leaf Gardens , and an event to honour his number.

But Keon will finally put the bad blood aside when the Leafs honour the 67′ Cup winners Saturday at the Air Canada Centre.   Forty years after Toronto’s last Cup win, fans are more than willing to welcome him back with open arms.

For his old teammates, it’s time to let the healing begin.

“He was my idol,” said Mike Walton, a member of the ’67 team.   “I came down to St. Michael’s where he had attended school and wore his same number and went through St. Michael’s to the Marlies and played junior. I had number 14 and he was the same size as me and I tried to copy his style.”

Dave Keon Jr. wouldn’t miss the moment for anything.

“I’m really happy,” he said.   “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been working at the Gardens and A.C.C. for 20 years and people ask me every day when will (he) come back. We’re really excited it’s going to happen tomorrow night.”
