Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft has bailed his teammates out of several sticky situations this season, but on Monday night, in what was a crucial game, he simply bailed.
Raycroft let in five goals on just 16 shots as the Leafs watched the Montreal Canadiens creep back into playoff contention with a crucial 5-4 win.
Goaltending wasn’t the only problem the Leafs faced. They couldn’t stay out of the box, with three of Montreal ‘s markers coming on the powerplay.
Michael Ryder, Saku Koivu and Sheldon Souray all scored with the man advantage.
Tomas Plekanec and Mike Johnson also scored for the Habs, who jumped over the idle New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Jeremy Williams and Alex Steen scored early in the third to give the Leafs a slim glimmer of hope. Bates Battaglia and Bryan McCabe also scored for 10th-place the Leafs, who desperately tried to rally, to no avail.
Jean-Sebastien Aubin eventually took over from Raycroft and stopped all eight shots he faced, but the damage was done.
