Nationals Edge Jays In Matinee

Josh Towers put in a solid performance on the mound and Frank Thomas broke Edgar Martinez’s record for most homers by a designated hitter with his 244th blast, but it wasn’t enough as the Toronto Blue Jays fell to the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Jays failed in their bid to reach the .500 mark and had their three-game win streak abruptly snapped after the Nationals broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning when Ryan Zimmerman took Towers deep.

The Jays haven’t been .500 since May 1.

After the game, Thomas talked about his latest milestone.

“I’ve been around long enough to accomplish something like that, I’m proud of that,” he said. “My thoughts right now are to get this team somehow to .500, then we can really start to roll.”

Manager John Gibbons expressed his disappointment with the lost opportunity, but in typical fashion, didn’t let it rattle him.

“Today was a chance to get back to .500, it didn’t happen,” he said. “That would have been nice going into that off day. That’s baseball.”
