Subway Shutdown And Highway Hassles Hamper Afternoon Rush Hour

It was another one of those days for subway riders and drivers using North America’s busiest highway. The Bloor-Danforth line from Broadview to Victoria Park was shut down for more than 90 minutes during the afternoon rush Monday, after a problem at the Coxwell station. TTC officials and police spent more than an hour and a half investigating a personal injury situation, forcing commuters up into the streets and onto shuttle buses.
As happens in most cases of this kind, the wheeled replacements did their best, but the affected area was jammed with thousands of extra commuters, backing up traffic. Just after 3:45pm, regular service resumed and the buses departed for good.
Meanwhile, things weren’t that much better for those who took the car. A collision involving a truck that hit a median affected the collector-to-express lanes on the westbound 401 near McCowan. Traffic was backed up from Markham and commuters going the other way were also slowing down to take a look, further complicating matters.
Not long after that, on another highway, came another hassle. This time, it was a vehicle fire that sent smoke billowing across the northbound 427 ramp to the eastbound 401. Only the left lane was getting through and access to the 401 was moving but restricted. Crews quickly put the fire out, allowing traffic to flow a bit more smoothly, but delays remained.
