It was an event that was supposed to raise up to half-a-million dollars to help fight a deadly disease, but Wednesday night’s 11th annual gala in support of the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR) at the Royal Ontario Museum was cut short after a bomb scare forced the abrupt cancellation of the festivities mid-way through the evening.
A suspicious package led explosive experts to utilize their robot. In the end it was determined that the package was purposely made to look like a bomb, but wasn’t dangerous.
“We found a number of wooden dowels that were made to look like a bomb. There were some wires in there and a battery and a motherboard,” explains Toronto Police Insp. Mario DiTomasso.
“It’s kind of a very sad day for us,” adds Elissa Beckett Exec. Dir., CANFAR. “We’re lucky because our sponsors have been so supportive, and all the dinners guests have been very, very understanding.”
It’s not known how much research money was lost to the hoax and there’s no word yet if police have any suspects.
