It’s a custom to use a romantic setting to propose to someone you want to marry, but for one man in Prince George, B.C., it was more a matter of customs.
Aaron Tkachuk had the scenario perfectly laid out. He would take his girlfriend, Jennifer Rubadeau, on a romantic trip to the Caribbean, where he would get down on one knee on a moonlit beach and ask for her hand in marriage.
It sounded like the perfect plan, until they wound up at the airport waiting for their plane. The couple, both aged 24, was clearing customs when one of the security agents noticed something suspicious about Tkachuk’s footwear. An X-ray showed a strange box-like shape in his shoe and he demanded that the would-be passenger explain what it was.
There wasn’t much the young man could do but comply, even as a perplexed Rubadeau looked on. So he removed the shoe and the sock and out popped a box containing a white gold, diamond and ruby ring.
With the element of surprise gone, Tkachuk decided the jig was up and proposed on the spot. As those waiting behind in line watched and with officials laughing, Rubadeau said yes, and the crowd cheered as the newly engaged duo went to board their plane.
It wasn’t quite the romantic moment he’d planned, but it will make a far better story for their kids about the day airport officials asked him if he had anything to declare and he did – his love.
