Certain subway stations at the north end of the Yonge line may close early starting in June so crucial repair work can happen.
A report from the TTC recommends closing affected stations at 12:30am instead of 2am each night except Saturday. The 90 extra minutes would allow workers to get important tunnel repairs completed sooner. Under the plan, service from Lawrence to Finch would close early between June 2008 and February 2009, while Davisville to Sheppard/Yonge would be affected between March 2009 and July 2010.
Shuttle buses would transport passengers along the affected stretch, at a cost of $1.7 million.
Underground crews are trying to get the work done by July, 2010 but because they only have a limited number of hours that the subway doesn’t run, they’re figuring they won’t be finished until closer to 2013. Engineers insist the fixes happen by 2010 though or else the tunnels may not be safe.
The Yonge line has been in operation from Union up to Eglinton since 1954, but it was extended up to York Mills in 1973 and as far north as Finch a year later.
