Jays Down Philly In Final Spring Training Date

The next one matters.

The Blue Jays finished up its Grapefruit League schedule Saturday, managing a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

With most of both teams’ starters taking just two or three at-bats, the wind down in the later innings was symbolic of the game’s lack of significance, all on a chilly afternoon that seemed to be begging for regular season weather and play.

Meanwhile, Aaron Hill hit his second homer in two days for the Blue Jays and Shannon Stewart, Vernon Wells and Marco Scutaro each drove in a run.

Toronto finished 13-16 in spring action and has Sunday off ahead of Monday’s season opener against the Yankees in New York. Ace starter Roy Halladay will take the mound in that one against Chien-Ming Wang and manager John Gibbons insists his team is ready to take on the Yankees.

“We better be. It’s always a circus up there,” he said.
