It was supposed to be the start to a fun-filled long weekend, but it turned to tragedy last Friday when three inseparable friends were killed in a car crash near Warkworth Ont., northeast of Cobourg.
On Thursday, funeral services were held for 19-year-old Erin Reed, and friends Robyn Taylor, 20, and Kandas Derry, 21.
The trio was killed when their car made a U-turn into the path of a tanker truck. They were all from Colborne, a close-knit town of about 2,000 people.
The first of the funerals took place Thursday morning for Derry in Cobourg.
“Kandas was the kind of person who would always bring a smile to your face,” one mourner remarked.
The three were going to a party travelling on County Road 25, four kilometres south of Warkworth, when disaster struck.
Reed was at the wheel of the Chevy Cavalier, and police believe she may have been talking on a cell phone at the time, possibly distracting her.
All three women died instantly at the scene, marking an ominous beginning to the Victoria Day weekend.
Later Thursday afternoon a double funeral was held for Erin and Robyn in their hometown of Colborne. The two friends were eulogized together in a single funeral service.
“Erin was an amazing person, She was full of life. It’s a big shock. She was really young, she didn’t deserve this,” said friend Sarah Taylor.
Mourners all carried balloons and at the end of the funeral service they were released into an overcast sky.
Police say there will be no charges laid against the driver of the truck. He was not injured in the crash.
