Three GTA youths have been arrested and charged after as many as 20 headstones were vandalized at an Oshawa cemetery overnight.
Around 3:30am Friday, police were called to St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery on Simcoe Street North where they found several headstones had been tipped over and damaged – some smashed to pieces. Flowers that had been placed on graves were strewn throughout the yard.
Officers caught up with a 17-year-old Markham girl, a 12-year-old Oshawa girl and a 15-year-old Bowmanville boy walking nearby and found flowers on one of the suspects. They arrested all three and charged them with mischief.
The youngest suspect was allegedly found carrying the flowers away from the scene.
Police released the two girls, but held the boy, who has also been charged with breach of probation, for a bail hearing.
The damage is estimated at $15,000.
