Edmonton Workers Win $49 Million Lotto 6/49 Jackpot

If you’re going to have nearly $50 million in your account, it might help to know a thing or two about money.

And according to reports, the winners of the second biggest lottery prize in Canadian history are well qualified. They’re 13 people who toil at an Edmonton bank, the sole holders of a Lotto 6/49 ducat worth $49,851,871.

Lottery officials in Alberta haven’t confirmed the win yet, but indications are the co-workers will split the prize, offered in Wednesday night’s draw.

It’s the second time a group of employees in the province has seen a near record payout. Back in October 2005, 17 oil and gas workers won the all-time biggest prize in Canadian history, getting a share of an eye popping $54.3 million.

It’s not clear when the winners will step forward, but they have up to a year to claim the bounty.

The fortunate few beat odds of 14 million-to-one to claim the money, coming up with these unofficial numbers:

4, 22, 26, 29, 39 and 48. The bonus was 31.

The $49 million was the third biggest overall windfall since the inception of the games of chance in the Great White North. The previous one ticket only record holder came from Ottawa in November 2008, when five workers from the finance department of Nav Canada flew home with a whopping $40.4 million prize.

Of the top 13 all time solo jackpots – a draw in which there’s only one winning ticket – seven have come from Ontario. Three were from out west. And two lucky people in Quebec have taken home their own tax free fortunes over the years.
