DriveTest Strike Deadline Extended

It appears Toronto may not have seen its last job action for the summer of 2009, but those who have booked a driver’s test for Thursday can take their exam as planned.

The union that staffs Ontario’s DriveTest Centres has extended its strike deadline to 2:15am on Friday.

That’s 24 more hours at the bargaining table for after the United Steelworkers Union and multinational company Serco.

Earlier, the strike was set to begin on Thursday morning if an agreement was not reached.

Should workers proceed with a strike, any scheduled driving tests would be postponed indefinitely.

DriveTest operates 55 full-time examination centres in Ontario and 38 part-time centres.

Serco, which is contracted by the Ministry of Transportation to run the centres, presented its final offer late on Wednesday and the union called it “encouraging.”
