Construction began Monday on the light-rail transit line that will run along Sheppard Avenue East, linking the subway to northern Scarborough.
All three levels of government were present for a ceremony marking the start of construction on the 14-kilometre electric rail line that will replace current bus service on Sheppard, from Don Mills to Meadowvale. The Sheppard LRT is the first of seven new connecting rail lines.
The federal government and the province are putting forward $950 million for the joint TTC and Metrolinx project.
“It’s going to link up this entire 14 kilometres of Scarborough, which today is linked only by a very long bus route and with the LRT you’ll have rapid, reliable transit straight through to the subway and into downtown,” TTC Chair Adam Giambrone said.
The LRT will operate in dedicated lanes in the middle of Sheppard East from Consumers Road to Meadowvale. West of Consumers, the LRT will run through a tunnel under Highway 404 and connect directly to the subway platform at Don Mills station.
About 10 million riders currently use this route and that number is expected to double by 2021.
