Body Of Snowmobiler Pulled From Ontario Lake

The OPP is warning outdoor enthusiasts to stay off area lakes after several snowmobiles went through the ice in the past few days, resulting in one death.

Shortly after 7pm on New Year’s Day, a 43-year-old snowmobiler headed out from a cottage near Minden, but failed to return.

His two friends went looking for him and found he had fallen through the ice, which was too thin for them to successfully rescue him.

Crews combed the area Friday night, but had to bring in dive teams Saturday morning to continue the search. Hours later they found the body.

Within two hours, police got a call about four snowmobiles going through the ice near Peterborough. No one was harmed in that incident.

Police say ice conditions are unpredictable and extremely unsafe because of the recent mild weather.
