Chinese New Year

From Toronto to Beijing, Chinese communities across the world are celebrating Monday after ringing in their new year over the weekend.

2010 marks the Year of the Tiger, said to be a sign of bravery. People born in that 12-month period are thought to generally be well-liked because of their charismatic personalities and straightforward nature. Tigers tend to be ambitious, always trying to climb the corporate ladder, but get bored easily which may result in multiple careers. Tigers are also born leaders, smart and instinctive.

Many people, including some of Canada’s most notable politicians, are wishing the Chinese community kung hey fat choi.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on Lunar New Year:

Please accept my warmest wishes as we welcome the Year of the Tiger.  The celebration gives us a chance to make plans for the year to come, to reflect on the successes and challenges of the year that was and to count our many blessings.  Courageous, competitive and confident, the tiger embodies traits that will stand Canada in good stead moving forward in the New Year.

The year before us holds great promise.  Canada will stage the G-8 and G-20 summits, where the world’s most powerful leaders will set a new course towards sustained growth and prosperity.  We will host Presidents Obama and Calderon at the North American Leaders’ Summit.  And we welcome the world to Vancouver and Whistler at the 21st Winter Olympic Games.  These are exciting times for Canada and this will energize Lunar New Year celebrations in homes and communities across our great country.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for good health and good fortune.  May the New Year be peaceful and prosperous for you and your family.

Thank you.

Federal NDP leader Jack Layton issued the following statement:

Nin Hao.
On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I join you and your family in celebrating the New Year of the Tiger. The Tiger is revered and respected for courage, strength, leadership and optimism. The Chinese community in Canada has demonstrated all of these qualities in building this great nation.

New Democrats will be inspired by the Tiger as we work to rebuild our economy for all hard working families.

May the Year of the Tiger bring good health, peace, prosperity and success.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Kung Hey Fat Choy!

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement:

“Saehae bok manhi badeuseyo.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Parliamentary caucus, I would like to send you our best wishes for the Lunar New Year.

One of the best things about Gujeong celebrations is how much it is truly about family coming together. It is in the observance of that vital connection between generations that deeply enriches the holiday. As much as the feasting and the spirit of generosity ushers in the new moon, it is being with those that we love – and taking the day to savour it – that makes the new year so important.

May the New Year bring peace, prosperity and great happiness to you and your loved ones.”
