Luminato Lights Up Yonge Dundas Square

Some serious star power hit Yonge Dundas Square Friday night, showing off their talents to help kick off the fourth annual Luminato festival.

Canadian music powerhouses Jully Black and Sass Jordan certainly fit the evening’s theme of “Divas.”

“To me a diva, is more of a showman and bigger than life. And I’m just really about emotion and about raw energy. How Canadian!” said Jordan.

The free concert is just the beginning of 10 days with more than 150 art installations, concerts and various events throughout the city.

Rufus Wainwright – called “the greatest songwriter on the planet” by Elton John – will debut his first opera, Prima Donna; the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will put on a late-night performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9; and John Malkovich will play an Austrian evildoer in The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer.

Luminato attracted 1.5 million people in 2009 with 2.5 million dollars of funding from the federal government this year.
