10 Couples To Wed During Pride Parade

Pride Toronto is celebrating its 30th anniversary and nearly a dozen same-sex couples are hoping their unions last just as long.
Ten couples plan to get hitched on floats during the massive Pride Parade Sunday to celebrate the five-year anniversary of legislation that made same-sex marriage legal in Canada.
Half of the soon-to-be newlyweds are from the United States.
This year’s Pride festivities were delayed by a week because of last week’s G20 summit. And the scene of summit tensions between police and protesters at Queens Park will be replaced this weekend by a party atmosphere with a free concert by Cyndi Lauper.
“I think the G20 put sort of a bad haze over Toronto and I think this an opportunity to show a more celebratory side of Toronto,” Pride attendee April Andrews said.
Businesses are also happy Pride is back – many had to close during the G20.
“I have a very high standard for this weekend,” Cafe California owner Vince Moneva said.
“I’m very happy,” he added.
“We expect to be at capacity,” agreed Anna Maria Bura, the owner of O’Grady’s.
Lauper, an icon in the gay and lesbian community, will perform Saturday. She hits the stage at 9pm.
