Not So Fast: Drivers Contend With More Gardiner Gridlock

After a weekend of stop-and-go traffic on the Lakeshore thanks to a Gardiner Expressway closure, motorists looking to rev their engines Monday morning were sorely disappointed.
Traffic on the much-maligned Gardiner has been reduced to two lanes in both directions near the Jameson exit for construction. The Jameson exit is incidentally also closed for bridgework.
The work is scheduled to continue until December 17, well past Toronto’s typical summer “construction season.”
There will also be two more complete Gardiner closures the weekends of Sept. 18 and Oct. 2.
Many drivers who turned to the tried and true Lakeshore Boulevard alternate this past weekend found themselves sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The Kingsway, Queensway and King Street are solid alternatives, depending on where you’re heading in the city.
The TTC and GO Transit will alleviate the need to battle the morning rush, which traffic officials now say is starting about half an hour to 45 minutes earlier, with cars piling up around 5:30 or 6am.
But Union Station maintenance workers are set to “go” on strike as of 12:01am Tuesday. GO Transit has assured riders any job action won’t affect its service, but that remains to be seen.
