Garmin recalls GPS units due to possible fire hazard

GPS manufacturer Garmin is recalling some nüvi units due to a potential fire hazard.

The hazard is caused by a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design on the units battery which may overheat in some circumstances which can potentially cause a fire hazard.

The defect is predicted to effect more than 1.25 million units.

Garmin says the batteries were manufactured by a third-party supplier within a defined date code range.

The recalled units include a small subset of the following model numbers: nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W and nüvi 7xx, where xx is a two-digit number.

Customers can determine the nüvi model number by looking at the label on the back or bottom of the nüvi.

Affected units will receive a replacement battery.

Customers can contact Garmin at 1 (866) 957-1981, or through their website at my.garmin.com.
